End of the semester

Jeffrey has proposed to the appropriations board that we bring over Koren Z., author of Smashed, to come and talk to our campus about gender equality and the many other elements of her life that are written in her book. We are still waiting for a yay or nay.

There will be an information shock when the people on campus move in at the beginning of next semester when we hand out information and try to recruit more members. There will be open mic nights, chalkings, button and t-shirt sales as well as some other tricks up our sleeves.

Next semester, we hope to enter with a bang.

Is it more difficult?

"Is it harder for women in the industry in general? Definitely. I was trying to make a case for Madonna the other day, saying that she's to be admired for her longevity in a genre that has mostly been for younger acts. Men are able to sustain a career into their 50s and 60s and still present themselves as sex symbols. With women on the other hand, people say, 'Why doesn't she retire?' It's just so unfair. So I have to give props to Madonna."

Upcoming Events!

We have been doing pretty darn well this semester, what with the abundant t-shirts and buttons that have been sold and new ideas swirling around. Well, add another event to your list of things to do this semester (which should also include reading the book Smashed and Manifesta).

Also, keep March open and come out the Women's History Month speakers that SAGE will be hosting! Events are in our SAGE calendar. Add it to your own google calendar.
We are currently working on more buttons and hope to sell them at the upcoming events.

If you are into "classic" movies at all, check this blog entry about sexism in the film "Spellbound".

Banner

So Oktoberfest was alright and we just thank the powers that be that it is over.

In better and more exciting news, everyone should go to the commons and check out our awesome banner that is surrounded by significantly less cool banners.

We need to keep riding this creative bandwagon and come up with ideas for t-shirts to sell.

Thought for the week/day/blog:
Are robots ambi-gender-ous? Or is it that the majority of people who make them just happen to be men so it takees on male characteristics?

Oktoberfest

Just a few updates. Oktoberfest is Wednesday, Oktober 8 from 11-3 on the not Sammy side of Henson. We are planning on having a game and having lots of fun.

If you want to start early and help out, grab the Flyer newspaper or any other newspaper (to use) and look at this for a sort of pirate hat to make.

If you want to make some crowns (which are cooler) look at this for a reference.

If you watched the Palin/Biden debate, feel free to share your thoughts on what went on. If you missed it (which I should mention, shame on you. This was the only debate for the vice presidents and it was historic) here is the transcript  from CNN.

Sarah Palin may be a woman but she is not what we need as a leader and anyone that was swayed during this debate or this political season should take a hard look at the facts of her background and not just listen to her ramblings about John McCain. Other than cramming for that test (the debate), she has yet to prove that she is worthy of the position that she has been placed in. This is not to say she doesn't think she can do that job but can we let one woman's fantasy about the presidency run the United States into the ground?

"People aren't looking for more of the same. They are looking for change. And John McCain has been the consummate maverick in the Senate over all these years."
-Sarah Palin

Change is not with another polarizing leader. I think dear old Sarah should look at the another definition of maverick (below).

Crafts for SAGE?

While on my merry way along the yellow brick road of the internet, I came upon a site that taught me how to make paper wallets. That was cool and I was obsessed with making them for a while but that phase of my life is over, alas.

Well, the site http://www.instructables.com/ is not just for making paper wallets। They also have things that I thought SAGE might be into. For instance, if you check out the links below, you will see that there are a variety of recycled materials that we could use for pencil cases or little bags for various things. The thing about these pencil cases is that they don't have to be made out of juice cartons or potato chip bags but basically anything that would hold some weight and would be kind of waterproof. Examples would be things like the rice bags or other recycled materials (personally I don't like the idea of having a potato chip pencil bag but we can use this as a sample to get other things going).

Our buttons will be mailed to our button making woman as soon as I can lay my hands on a stamp or two. Do the "forever" stamps ship any weight anywhere? I doubt it somehow. So those will be in soon, hopefully in time for Oktoberfest.

Don't forget the meeting on Wednesday @ 8pm in TETC 219! Hope to see all the shining faces of yore there.

If anyone has any other ideas for things to sell for SAGE so that we can fundraise to bring a speaker here, please submit them below.

New SAGE blog!

SAGE has started a blog in order to stay in tune with you "hip" youngsters who use your blackberries and do not even know what a real blackberry is. This blog will be featuring different collaborators about different subjects. Mostly, they will have to do with SAGE events and getting people hyped up for those. Other subjects may include political rants against what our government, or SU for that matter, is doing to us, men and women alike.

This is a more informal way to get the message across and to relate to people in general. If you wish to contribute, please email sage21801@gmail.com your message. If it is chockablock full of spelling and/or grammar errors, it will not be posted. Come on people, we are in college now! Stop typing "then" when you mean "than"!

See how it starts already?
